Through a set of creatively produced information packs and activities, this year long project (Aug 2021 to Aug 2022) will introduce children to the process of weaving handloom fabrics and details about 10 weaves from different parts of the country.
74 years after independence, handloom is facing the risk of being drowned out by fast fashion and large-scale industries. Despite being the second largest employment sector in rural India, there is not enough in place to sustain and support the tradition. The Covid-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to the Indian weavers with many of them losing their livelihood.
We hope that through this project we will be able to take young children a step closer to recognising & appreciating this beautiful heritage of ours.
Through the next few months, we will introduce children to the process of weaving and acquaint them with some of the wonderful weaving traditions in India; sharing the history, practice and contemporary usage.
